I came across this YouTube video made in April 2010 during Autism Awareness Month on the Ohio State campus made by the Autism Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) chapter in Central Ohio. It focused on the idea that Autism Speaks really doesn’t speak for people with autism. They go around campus with the intention of handing out fliers when they come across signs with “facts” that aren’t really facts about autism on the back. Give the video a watch and then comment on how you feel.
Does Autism Speaks send the wrong message that people with autism need to be “fixed” or can’t advocate for themselves? Let’s open it up to a discussion. I’d be interested to hear what you all think.
