Chaka Khan and many others are working on a new documentary called “Colored My Mind”. The documentary is focused on five mothers of children with autism and their personal struggle coming to terms with the diagnoses and in many ways being able to admit that their child did indeed have autism. For many people in the black community, admitting that your child has a mental illness is unheard of. This documentary reaches out specifically to the “black and brown community” and asks people to realize the issue and confront it head on instead of trying to bury it.

In general, black children with autism can be one to two years older than white children before they are diagnosed with autism. Many people like those that run the website Autism in Black.com are trying to encourage fellow parents of children with autism to seek help and not wait for the “problem to fix itself”.
